Personality: Paine is an amazing sword fighter who may be young but is mature than her age. Mostly quiet and taciturn, she reacts sarcastically when she thinks her team mates are getting too boisterous. She is seen as cold, emotionless and reserved but she has a compassionate heart and loyal. And beneath everything, she is far from a killjoy.
History: Crimson spheres document Paine's experiences as a warrior-fighter for the Crimson Squad, which was intended to be an elite unit to surpass the Crusaders, with the best members being assigned to lead Crusader chapters across Spira. These spheres reveal that Paine had been the recorder for a group of candidates named Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal, the game's present day leaders of the Youth League, New Yevon, and the Machine Faction, respectively.
Most of the Crimson Squad candidates died during the group's final field exercise, which took place in a cave beneath Mushroom Rock Road called "the Den of Woe". This followed as a result of the pyreflies within the cave overwhelming them with the despair of the unsent named "Shuyin", causing them to turn on one another.Only Nooj, Baralai, Gippal and Paine escaped alive, but later, Nooj — possessed by Shuyin himself — fired on his friends, effectively ending their friendship for two years. Just before Yuna joined the group, Paine enlisted in the Gullwings in the hopes of finding out more about why the Crimson Squad had been massacred — and because she had long desired to fly in an airship.

They were standing on the bridge of the Gullwings ship, her red colored eyes watched as Yuna and Rikku were talking. Everyone had been fighting lately and Paine could tell that it was stressing Yuna out. Calmly walking over, sword in her hand, Paine spoke. "Rikku had a plan to, hopefully, dull the fighting." Paine stood back and allowed Rikku to speak of the plan while Paine walked away, watching as the lands rolled beneath them.
Paine felt as though she didn't belong there, as she looked at everyone acting like family and laughing. Before she could dwell too much, an alarm went off. "Fiend!" Paine cried and all three girls were transported to the fiend. The fiend looked like a strange tiger and Paine gripped onto her sword. Just then, two more fiends arrived. They were called Queen Coeurl's and there was one for each girl.
As Yuna and Rikku attacked their own, Paine dodged a hit from the fiend before rushing in and slicing with her sword. "Here comes the hurt." Paine said coldly.
And so it went from hitting to dodging and Paine was loving it. It allowed her to release her frustrations and uncertainty and she enjoyed every moment of it. As the last strike killed the fiend, Paine stood back. "Never mess with the Gullwings." Paine smiled softly before shaking her head. I have to stop hanging out with Yuna. Paine looked over at her friends, glad to see they weren't hurt too badly. "You guys did good." Paine said and sat down, checking out her own wounds.
